Why use a certified vinyl siding installer?

Purchasing new vinyl siding can be a big investment. If you want the confidence that your cladding is installed correctly, using a certified vinyl siding installer or a certified installer company is a smart choice.

The Vinyl Siding Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group for the vinyl cladding industry, offers three different training programs for installers:

  1. Certified installers
  2. Certified trainers
  3. Certified installer company

These programs, which are administered and reviewed by a third-party firm, offer benefits to both homeowners and cladding installers and contractors. They are an affirmation of an installer or company's skills and understanding of proper vinyl siding installation techniques, which can give you greater confidence as a customer. There are a handful of requirements that installers or company representatives must complete to be certified.

Certified vinyl siding installers

Certified cladding installers must have at least one year of experience and complete a course taught by a certified trainer. Workers with at least three years experience can skip the training course and just take the exam. Certification is good for three years. If you contact a company that has been accredited as a certified installer company, they have undergone a quality control program and have one certified installer or trainer on every work crew.

Benefits of proper installation

Running wall cladding isn't the hardest part of a construction job, but like any task, doing it right eliminates the chance for problems down the road. Certified installers know how to do the following:

  • Properly waterproof windows and doors and install vapor barrier to protect your home from water penetration
  • Correctly fasten the cladding so that it can expand and contract with the climate changes -- crucial to keeping it from warping or splitting
  • Install trim, fascia and soffits to complete your job

There are more than 3,500 certified installers in the U.S. and Canada, the VSI says.

Many extremely proficient siding contractors, including certified installers, are among the pre-screened professionals available through this site. Find licensed, bonded and insured* contractors to properly install your new vinyl siding.
