Fiber Cement Siding Installation, It Might Be Easier Than You Think
Fiber cement siding is a great product if you like the look of wood siding, but don't want the maintenance chores that wood siding sometimes requires. Fiber cement siding installation is even similar to installing wood, and it is available in colors, or ready for paint.
Fiber Cement Siding Installation Tips
Keep your fiber cement siding stored flat and in a dry place prior to installation. If you install wet fiber cement siding, it may shrink as it dries. Fiber cement siding is heavier than wood siding, and you may find it easier to work with an assistant when carrying and installing it. Carry individual board on edge, as they may snap if you attempt to carry them flat.
- A diamond saw blade is recommended for cutting the siding, as fiber cement is very dense;
- Always cut outdoors and wear a dust mask, cutting creates a lot of dust;
- Hand nailing is possible, but you should drill a 1/8 inch pilot hole first;
- Pneumatic coil nailers designed for fiber cement are recommended to reduce installation time.
Cover the exterior of your home with a water resistant paper prior to fiber cement siding installation. Install your corner trim boards, which are also available in fiber cement. Using furring strips behind the trim boards to create more definition from the siding is an option.
- Install your first fiber cement board at the bottom of the wall;
- Measure up from the bottom board, marking where the top of boards should be moving up the wall;
- Use a chalk line to make horizontal lines marking where the top of each board should be;
- Install fiber cement siding boards up the wall, alternate locations of butt joints if applicable.
You may feel like a pro by the time you install fiber cement siding on your first wall section, but don't rush the job. Remember to work safely, wear eye and ear protection as needed, and be careful on ladders.
