Exterior siding cost: How much is installation labor?

Deciding which of the many types of exterior siding might be the best choice to give your home a fresh appearance can be a lot of fun. There are veneers that can totally change the house's look and others that may simply provide a much needed exterior face-lift. If you're like many homeowners these days and working with a tight budget, the price variations in siding types may be playing a big part in your decision-making process. However, if you're planning on hiring a contractor for the installation, don't forget that labor can also affect your final siding cost.

How much of your siding cost is labor?

You've probably already noticed that some types of exterior cladding are budget-friendly and others perhaps not so much. Many styles of vinyl siding are suitable for just about any budget, but veneers such as brick or natural stone might require a quick check of the amount in your remodeling fund. But what about the installation labor for the various cladding types? Is there a good choice for keeping your siding cost down?

Installation labor can vary just as much as the cladding prices, and job site variables can also affect your labor costs. Labor rates for installing vinyl siding on a three-level home are often more than on a single-level model that may not even require a ladder. The number of obstacles -- such as close trees and shrubs the installers have to work around -- also can factor into labor costs. However, the following approximate labor rate ranges should be helpful in determining which type of siding might work best with your budget:

  1. Wood siding -- $0.80 to $1.60
  2. Stucco -- $1.20 to $1.50
  3. Vinyl siding -- $1.20 to $1.70
  4. Fiber cement siding -- $1.45 to $1.75
  5. Brick veneer -- $5.00 to $8.00

Don't forget to add the material costs to these labor rates when deciding which veneer might be right for your home. Also keep in mind that these costs per square foot of wall area may vary depending on your locale. A pre-screened, certified professional, like those found in our contractor network, can help you estimate the total cost of your project.
